International Student Editorial Board

The International Student Editorial Board (ISEB) is the only of its kind in the world. It unites student who dedicate their time and energy selecting and reviewing articles from all over the world. ISEB members' collective opinion is decisive for promotion of the manuscripts for professional scientist review and publication in the Journal of Student Science and Technology. ISEB represent the vanguard of the future cohort of scientists and researchers. They are the next generation of VPs of research, Deans of science departments, Principal Investigators, CEOs and others who will create and shape the science and technology of the future.

Student Editors

Aisha Mohamed is an undergraduate student in the Life Sciences program at McMaster University. Aisha has a passion for research and has been involved in research projects in pediatrics, epidemiology and pedagogy. She began her research working with the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging and she is currently completing my senior thesis, which focuses on analyzing acute kidney injury scoring in patients with septic shock. Aisha has been involved in various curriculum development initiatives within the Life Sciences program. This past year, She worked as a student partner for the MacPherson Institute to develop sub-plans in the Life Sciences program. In addition to this, Aisha has worked as an executive member for the McMaster Life Science Society, and served as the co-coordinator for the McMaster Interdisciplinary Research Exposition. She is also interested in research and scientific writing and is currently working as a peer reviewer for the International Journal for Students as Partners. Outside of research, she is an avid runner and enjoys travelling.

Debbie Kao is a third year undergraduate student studying Health Sciences at McMaster University. Having being exposed to research in my senior high school years in a molecular biology lab, she has immediately developed a passion for science and health. Debbie currently works at the Sloboda lab in the McMaster Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences department studying inflammation in the placenta using a maternal diet induced obesity model. In addition, she also works with an endocrinologist to investigate the bone, metabolic and health effects of tyrosine kinase inhibitors in patients, as well as looking at the metabolism of children who are survivors of childhood brain tumour. Debbie is passionate about child health, women health and the immunology aspects of research, and am excited to join the FSST editorial board to continue the conversation about science. Besides Science, she loves bridging the gap between humanities and science, as she runs an annual visualizing Science Art Exhibition that uses art to portray scientific research. In her spare time, she enjoys reading about psychology, playing softball, volunteering and drawing as a freelance artist.

Fatima Sheikh is a third year of Honours Life Science at McMaster. Fatima hopes to complete an interdisciplinary minor in Globalization studies as she is passionate about Global health and other issues such as health equity, that concern the global community. she is also interested in researching topics within the Health Sciences, specifically at the intersection of health and community. Ultimately, Fatima is interested in learning how different disciplines can be used to tackle complex problems that we face today. She leads the McMaster Public Health Association (MPHA), Me to We Hamilton and the McMaster iGEM Team, all of which allow her to interact with people who are interested in helping to make a difference in our communities. In the past few years, Fatima has been a student in the Online Research Co-op program, a volunteer for the Co-op resource team and the very first Co-op ambassador team, a Research Help volunteer for the Co-op program and most recently a member of our national leadership team for our ambassador program. Aside from learning about STEM, she enjoys social science and humanities courses, especially those regarding international relations. In her spare time, Fatima enjoys reading, spending time with her family and friends and volunteering in the community.

Gladys Osadjere is an undergraduate student at the University of Toronto. She is working towards an Honours Bachelors of Science studying a double major in Neuroscience and Mental Health with a minor in Biology. Gladys academic interests include Cognitive Psychology, Neuroimaging, Neurodegenerative diseases and Mental Illnesses. Gladys will pursue a career in research and academia.
Her goal is to work in the field of Cognitive and Clinical Psychology to advance a greater understanding of the subject through research. In her spare time she advocates for racialized students, mental health, women, and queer bodies. Gladys is able to draw awareness to and support these three areas through her extracurricular activities. This includes volunteering with Footprints for Autism and functioning as Co-Chair for Future Black Physicians UTSC.

Hamza Waseem is a senior year of B.S. Electrical Engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan. For four years, he has worked with leading international science journals and magazines targeted toward high school and undergraduate students. Having launched an online science magazine and mentored over a dozen Pakistani undergraduates in scientific editing and peer review, Hamza is now working towards introducing student-powered science journalism in Pakistan. Keen on science outreach, he works as a science communicator with the Khwarizmi Science Society and have played an instrumental role in organizing Lahore Science Melas (festivals). Apart from that, he leads volunteer student groups that design and employ low-cost science demonstrations for STEM outreach. His work as a science communicator, TechJuice listed him among Pakistan’s top 25 under 25 in 2017. Hamza research interests lie in modern physics, optics and physics education. Currently, his research deals with metasurface holography and quantum optics. Hamza aspires to pursue physics for higher education and also hope to participate in science policy. In his spare time he enjoys reading literature and philosophy.

Sohaib Haseeb I am an undergraduate student at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario Canada, currently working towards my honours Bachelors of Science in Life Sciences. My career goal is to become an academic cardiologist. My research experience spans in the fields of chemistry, biology, and clinical cardiology. Outside of research, I love to tutor first year students by hoping to ease their transition to university. I am an exam-aid instructor for Students Offering Support (SOS) for first-year chemistry, a peer mentor and a learning strategist within his university’s student experience division, and a tutor to athletes. In my spare time, I like to spend time with friends or in the gym doing weight training.  

Vanessa Morris is currently a PhD student in the neuroscience program at McMaster University. Vanessa conducts research at St. Jospeh’s Healthcare Hamilton where she use various neuroimaging methods to study the neuroanatomical repercussions that arise as a result of prolonged substance abuse. She hopes to one day translate this research into novel treatment methods aimed at promoting recovery and maintaining sobriety in those with substance use disorders. In addition to her research, Vanessa devotes a great deal of time towards pedagogy, and is developing skills towards the practices of university teaching. She is also a member of a community outreach program aimed at bringing neuroscience experiments and discoveries into the classrooms of high school students in the community. In the future, Vanessa hopes to combine interests in writing, editing and neuroscience research, along with a career in university teaching. Outside of research and academia, Vanessa enjoys spending time and energy on training and competing in long distance running events.
